Observing 10th International Right to Know Day
by Right To Information Forum.


To bring the benefit of development, community need to have access to information, which is their right.  Aiming to achieve this objective --- Right to Information Day was observed in the city on 27th September 2012 with a seminar followed by a fair at Shishu Academy premise organised by Right To Information Forum.

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) actively participated in the overall events along with other organizations working with Right to Information Forum.

The seminar was started with welcome speech from Ms. Shaheen Anam, Convener, Right to Information Forum Mr. Syeed Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Informatics and Development (IID) presented a key note paper on “People’s Participation in Right to Information”. In his paper , he has explained on the importance of information dissemination among all,  particularly among the rural mass.

Mr. Abu Taher, The Acting Chief Information Commissioner, and Ms. Sadeka Haim, Information Commissioner of Information Commission were delivering their speeches as the special guests. Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, The Executive Director, TIB moderated the seminar, where Mr. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury gave vote of thanks.

Around 150 representatives from different organizations working with Right to Information participated in discussion session.  The fair was inaugurated immediately after the seminar.

BNNRC has projected its activities and publications on RTI in line with Community Radio broadcasting through a stall in the fair.

Observing 10th International Right to Know Day
at 14 Community Radio Stations in Bangladesh    

The Fourteen Radio Stations of the country are going to observe "The Right to Know day" in the coming fortnight during 27th September to 11 October 2012.

On the occasion of observing the day, the stations will organize seminar and workshop at local level. In these programs, media experts, dignitaries, govt.officials and local elected representatives will join.

Presently 14 community radio stations are working as a catalyst in raising awareness of the local people regarding their rights to know.  These Radio stations are By broadcasting 100-hour program in a day and Community Radio is now taking place the role of a neo-liberal media. A total of 536 young boys and girls are working as media professionals in these stations. Simultaneously, 125 members (98 male and 27 female), selected from the local community joined in Radio Management Committees took initiatives to operate radio stations on rural setting. This has made their position more valid on demand side for information accesss.More 22 Radio stations are waiting for license after getting security clearance.

On this backdrop, 14 community radio stations, are observing Right to know day for the first time in Bangladesh under the technical and financial assistance of Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) and Free Press Unlimited.
